A web-directory or web-catalog lists links sorted according to topic. Such a web-catalog is not edited by machines or software programs, but by human. This allows a much higher quality. The workload is quite big and a web-catalog should be updated continually, so many of these directories are limited on narrowly provided topics; on the other hand, Yahoo is an extensive web directory. Alternatively, automatically created directories are offered, too, (ad hoc principle), such as WiseGuide. Automated catalogs are more extensive and more prevailing, but they don't come up to the level of edited directories. For users, web-catalogs are additional supports to search engines.
