Search engines calculate the page rank, the positioning of a web page in the results list, with a method called page rank algorithm. It is a fairly complicated formula, which is repeated constantly, to achieve finer and more capable results. The calculation basis is the relevance of a page. Whereby, different links get different weights. A link which arises naturally is a valuable link, without having taken link sharing or similar claims. There must be a substantive relationship between the (valuable) link and the linked page. Of course, there are repeated attempts of fooling this calculating system, to reach a high ranking. However, an over-optimization of a site often has negative consequences; they can even lead to the exclusion from the leading search engine index.
