If there are way too many and striking links, there might be the danger, that search engines might categorize these sites as a link-farm. This is valued as a try of spamming and as a violation of the guideline of many search engines. These search purposeful for such link-farms and punish them with a ranking of 0 or by deletion from the index of the search engine. So, the site won’t be shown in the search results of the search engine anymore.
